My friend took over operations of an existing restaurant. Old owner was letting the servers do whatever on their tips. Turns out they do make a lot, and some were "allegedly" underreporting their income so they can stay on govt assistance. He changed policies to the LEGAL way of doing things first day, and they were not happy.
Oh you poor sweet summer child… the restaurant owners have you buffaloed into thinking you need to be claiming 100% of your cash tips. That is most likely screwing you over in the end after everything shakes out after tax season.
A lot of restaurants hace been getting strict about making their servers claim their tips, started around 6-8yrs ago. I assume the IRS was looking at all these places and wondering why they were only getting a fraction of the taxes they should, and threatemed to fine the businesses

$1k-1.5k a week is just slightly more than I make (after taxes) as a freaking engineer. Assuming she does 40 hours. Thats kinda insane, especially since she probably doesn’t work 40 hours to make that much and is probably underselling how much she makes in tips
